Welcome

About Us

Dr. Saurabh Chahande – Rheumatologist in Nagpur

Welcome to the practice of Dr. Saurabh Chahande, a rheumatologist in Nagpur providing specialised care for people living with arthritis, autoimmune diseases, connective tissue diseases and other rheumatic conditions.

Joint pain, stiffness and swelling are among the most common reasons people seek medical attention. However, these symptoms can have many different causes. Some are related to wear and tear, while others are caused by inflammation or abnormalities of the immune system.

Understanding this difference is at the heart of rheumatology.

Our approach is centred on finding the underlying cause of symptoms, establishing an accurate diagnosis, assessing disease activity and providing an appropriate long-term management plan.

Our Approach to Rheumatology Care

We believe that good rheumatology care begins with listening carefully to the patient.

Symptoms such as joint pain or fatigue can sometimes appear simple, but the pattern, duration and associated features may provide important clues about an underlying rheumatic or autoimmune disease.

During a consultation, attention is given to:

  • The nature and duration of symptoms
  • Pattern of joint pain and stiffness
  • Presence of joint swelling
  • Morning stiffness
  • Previous episodes of inflammation
  • Skin, eye or gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Muscle weakness or other systemic symptoms
  • Previous medical history
  • Family and medication history
  • Previous investigations and imaging

The objective is to bring these individual pieces together rather than treating an isolated symptom or laboratory result.

Why Rheumatology Requires a Different Approach

Not all joint pain is arthritis.

And not all arthritis is the same.

A person with knee pain may have osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, gout, a mechanical problem or another condition. Similarly, a positive autoimmune blood test does not automatically mean that a person has an autoimmune disease.

Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, Sjögren syndrome, scleroderma, vasculitis, inflammatory myositis and spondyloarthritis require clinical assessment and, when appropriate, targeted investigations.

This is why our focus is on:

Symptoms → Clinical Examination → Appropriate Investigations → Accurate Diagnosis → Individualised Treatment → Regular Monitoring

From Joint Pain to a Clear Diagnosis

Many patients come to a rheumatology clinic after experiencing symptoms for months or even years.

Some may have already undergone multiple investigations. Others may have been told that they have “arthritis” without a clear explanation of what type.

A major part of specialist rheumatology care is connecting the symptoms with the examination and investigations.

We aim to help patients understand:

What is causing my pain?

Is it inflammation, degeneration, crystal deposition, mechanical stress or another rheumatic condition?

Do I actually have an autoimmune disease?

Autoimmune blood tests are interpreted in the context of the complete clinical picture.

What investigations do I really need?

Not every patient requires every test. Investigations are selected according to the clinical assessment.

Do I need long-term treatment?

The answer depends on the underlying diagnosis, disease activity and individual circumstances.

How will my disease be monitored?

Inflammatory and autoimmune diseases may require ongoing assessment even when symptoms improve.

Our Philosophy: Treat the Disease, Not Just the Pain

Painkillers may provide temporary relief, but many rheumatic diseases require treatment directed at the underlying disease process.

Our philosophy is to distinguish between symptom relief and disease control.

Where appropriate, treatment is aimed at:

  • Controlling inflammation
  • Reducing symptoms
  • Preventing disease progression
  • Protecting joints and organs
  • Maintaining mobility and function
  • Improving quality of life
  • Monitoring treatment response and safety
  • Helping patients understand their condition

Treatment decisions are individualised because every patient and every rheumatic disease is different.

Patient-Centred Rheumatology

Living with a chronic rheumatic disease can affect much more than joints.

Pain and inflammation can influence mobility, sleep, work, physical activity and everyday life. Autoimmune diseases may also involve multiple organs and require long-term monitoring.

We therefore believe that effective rheumatology care should include communication and education, along with medical treatment.

Patients should leave a consultation with a better understanding of:

What do I have?
Why is it happening?
What do I need to do now?
How will we know whether treatment is working?
When should I seek further medical attention?

Joint 360 – Comprehensive Rheumatology Care

Joint 360 represents a comprehensive approach to joint and rheumatic health.

The aim is to look beyond a single painful joint and understand the patient as a whole.

From inflammatory arthritis and gout to autoimmune and connective tissue diseases, rheumatology often requires looking at the complete clinical picture.

Joint 360 provides a patient-focused setting for evaluation, treatment and follow-up of rheumatic conditions.
